Balthazar

French artist, lives and works in Mâcon.

A graduate of the School of Applied Arts in Lyon in 1990, BALTHAZAR has since pursued a pictorial exploration of memory, representation, and the transformation of recollections. From reality, to the dreamed, the imagined...

Her painting is part of a creative process on canvas that blends several mediums: paintings, photographs, and engraved writing. The writing, composed of words, dates, and places, evokes the feelings experienced. Its presence is perceived only through its relief in the material, without being decipherable, like a palimpsest.

The realistic and objective rendering of her photographs blends with the painting through a blurred effect, the near disappearance of the motifs. These are partial fragments of photographs, like so many traces of reality, incorporated into the painting. Something is always disappearing or reappearing, like the flickering field of a reflection or a memory.

Neither figurative nor abstract, her works transcend the limits of perception. Each canvas is executed around its own chromatic range, which underscores its unreality. With a few steps, a glance, a departure. The Natural world symbolized by a tree, the Spiritual world by the sea, the Architectural world by a door, and Humanity by a silhouette.

What do we erase from the world? What do we keep superimposed? What do we wrest from reality through photography? What do we reconstruct by planting colors, rhythms, and brushes on the canvas? If not a new world…
